Striper Fishing Report Sacramento River and Striper Fishing Maps & How to Fish this River!
(More fishing maps, please see below)
May is is the peak of striper season, and the best spots are upstream from Colusa on the Sacramento River and goes into June here.
Reference our striper fishing map, you can see, the stripers make it
as far as Redding, there could be good
fishing at Colusa and then further
downstream well into June. Excellent
striper fishing when the flow is at 4,800
cps, and a minimum is 3,900.
Some on the river
work plugs, the two most popular lures on the river here are the blue broken-back jointed Rebel and the
Cordell Redhead. On the other hand, bait fishermen work most of the Sacramento river, so at Freeport and the mouth of the American River, the
two top baits from Freeport upstream are
fresh sardines and anchovies. Anchovies
are usually “butterflied,” which means
each side of the fish is cut off the
backbone from the gills back.
Most fishermen hook
the fillet twice on long shank hook tied
to a 2- to 3-foot leader and use
super-light monofilament to tie on the
bait. Important in rigging is to use a Slide-doo or similar device that keeps the sinker from
interfering with the action of the bait, because these fish are very sensitive so if they feel
the sinker, they spit and split.
Although there are lots of boats, there is lots of spots on the Sacramento river
for bank access, including right in the city of Colusa is a hot spot for plug-casting but on the rest of the river, most of the bank
action is with bait .
Stripers also run in the Feather River, with mostly at Shanghai
Bend (see the Sacramento River fishing map) near Yuba City, but low
water there has made for spotty
fishing so far. The American River also provides good striper fishing in May, especially
in the lower reaches., using the same using
the same butterflied anchovies and
sardines are bait fished on a
sliding sinker rig or 5-inch
Rapalas, Cordells and Bombers.
